Day 2 Glacier

 Today we went on Going-to-the-Sun Road. We had a timed entry pass for 11am which the earliest I could get. The drive was incredible. Wow!! Majestic, colossal and breathtaking mountains and views. We saw some old snow that had not yet melted, many waterfalls, and lots of green and wildflowers. Hoping to stop at Logan Pass, we could not because everyone else thought the same and the parking lot was full so we had to keep moving. We were later told that Logan Pass is always busy from 7a-7p and especially since it was July 4, a holiday. At the east entrance and got our passport stamps and info of what to do and were told to travel south to Two Medicine. It ended up being a nice hike in Two Medicine to Aster Falls. Not too strenuous of a hike for everyone. Some kids did get their shoes and clothes wet at the falls by accident, but it didn’t spoil the hike back. We heard some new birds and saw lots of little Christmas trees growing in the forest. The weather was cloudy making the hike pleasant. It was the end of the day now so we decided to drive back on the shortest route. That meant we were not going back the way we came on the sun road. Since it was the 4th of July many dinner places were closed. We went to Smiths to grab some groceries and food for Claire and the rest of us ate at Jersey Boys pizza in Whitefish.

Off we go!

 The car is packed and we’re finally ready to go! It’s hard to believe we’ve made it to this point. First stop, Flagstaff. I’m really glad we chose a short drive for day 1. It gave us time to finish packing in the morning and make sure we had all we needed. Yes, someone still forgot a toothbrush! However, it gave us a more relaxed way to figure out loading, unloading and adjusting where needed for efficiency. After all, we’re on the road a lot and staying only one night in many places. Flagstaff: Stayed: at a family member’s cottage. Ate: Dinner at Pita Jungle         Breakfast: Morning Glory Café $$$ it was yummy, but pricey. We chose the Vegan restaurant due to Claire’s dairy allergies

Moab

 We arrived in Moab at 5p. We lost an hour going into Utah and left Flagstaff at around 10:20a.m. AZ time. We had hoped to go to the Moab Giants which is fun for littles going on a dinosaur walk. Sadly, we were 10 min too late for the tickets. After settling into our hotel we walked to dinner at 98Center. It was delicious. The kids ate grilled cheese, with a side of bread (no kidding, their choice instead of kettle chips 🤷🏼‍♀️) I had the Bahn Mi rice bowl with chicken, George had the sandwich version, and Claire had the beef Pho. For the evening, we went to Panorama Point for stargazing. It wasn’t really dark until almost 10p, but we really enjoyed looking for constellations. I recommend having your stargazing app ready to go since cell service is spotty and low. It was a great experience, especially for the older kids ages 11+. Day 2 in SD

 Another beautiful day! We ate breakfast at our hotel and went to Storybook Island. Storybook Island is a free 8.5 acre park with play areas all focused on storybook characters. It’s the most fun and imaginative place made by the rotary club. We all enjoyed our time there and spent 2-3 hours exploring and having fun. I’d highly recommend stopping there if you find yourself in Rapid City. It’s kept up very nicely and did I mention it’s free? For the 2nd half of the day we went to Deadwood and learned about Wild Bill Hickok. It’s a fun old west town with 10 min gun fight shows a couple times during the day. We went into the Adam’s museum which is also free and the kids had a little scavenger hunt competition, boys vs. girls. Boys won. It was a fun museum to go through. We also made sure to have the “Old Time Photos” taken of our family while we were there to carry on the tradition that both George and I did as kids. We ate dinner at Sam’s club. Cheap and easy.
